Austin Transportation Options

Lyft and Uber do not operate within the Austin city limits.

City of Austin Public Transportation Options:

Austin’s Public Bus Service CapMetro: Must have exact change or purchase pass.

MetroBus: Adult local one-way bus fare is one dollar, but the fare can change depending on the service and passenger type. A day pass, good for 24 hours on local bus service, is $2.50. The fare box on the bus is easy to use, with slots for bills, coins, and passes. Tell the driver if you need a day pass before you insert your money. Unfortunately the fare boxes require exact change.

MetroRapid: Catch a ride on MetroRapid! With 43 stations located along Route 801 and 34 stations along Route 803, MetroRapid can take you to any number of popular destinations along North Lamar and South Congress or Burnet and South Lamar.

MetroRail: Nine stations are located along the 32-mile line, and all trains stop at each station. You can get your ticket or value pass ahead of time - which we recommend - or buy it at the train station. Fares may be purchased in advance online, on the CapMetro Appat the Transit Store, or at retail outlets all around town. Be sure to validate your pre-purchased fare at a station validator on the train platform before you board! Tickets and passes purchased from the ticket vending machine at the train stations are already validated.

Alternative Transportation Options:

For your information: Austin streets often suddenly change names as you're traveling along them. Watch out for these:

  • Speedway becomes Congress south of MLK, and then S. Congress south of the river
  • Guadalupe becomes S. 1st south of the river
  • Mopac is also called Loop 1
  • Most streets downtown are one-way, except Congress. In downtown, even-numbered streets are Westbound only (e.g., 6th St.), and odd-numbered streets are Eastbound only (e.g., 5th). Guadalupe is two-way for most of its length, except for downtown between MLK and Cesar Chavez, where it's Southbound only. (If you're going north through the downtown area, take Lavaca, which runs parallel and immediately to the East of Guadalupe).
